The Heather Blazing – Colm Toibin

September 16, 2009

9780330321259-07I haven’t read Colm Toibin before, but appreciated the reviews for Brooklyn and so thought I would test the waters so to speak.

This was a beautiful though melancholy book, set on the Wexford coast where coastal erosion changes the landscape much as time and ageing changes the individual. Moving back and forth through time we observe Eamon Redmond as an older man looking back over his life which though successful on the surface carries its share of loneliness and isolation.

I loved the evocation of a rural Ireland that was strangely familiar in its family traditions and behaviours.

Soft and gentle like the Wexford rain.
