What a Day!

September 11, 2009

Days like today are not common.

Following last night’s fire in the Luk4 building, the demolition crew moved in this afternoon and completed the job within hours. The PSNI were able to open the road soon after 6pm. One corner of our Skainos site is now clear.

The TV film crew were wrapping up in the new community garden at the opposite end of the block, and the place was echoing to the sounds of children playing, even as the street remained empty of the usual rush hour traffic. One corner of the Skainos site is now green and colourful.

The Stepping Stone building re-modelling was complete, thus preparing the way for the decant of EBM office staff from the main building. Next week we’ll be moving desks, papers, computers etc. etc. into a new office. If you’re about please drop in and we’ll make you a tea/coffee. The office modifications are great.

The process of assessing the Pre-Qualification Questionnaires was on-going, leading eventually to the selection of the scheme contractor next year. I’ve spent most of the week assessing the submissions and will continue doing it until at least Tuesday.

And as I walked about the empty street outside the Mission this evening, chatting to contractors and colleagues I held in my hand the ‘green form’, indicating that the Department of the Environment had granted permission for Skainos to proceed. Needless to say I have a big smile all over my face. It’s just taken nearly 10 years.

Tonight I will celebrate. To quote my colleague and friend Mark (who has done a heroic job these last few days) – don’t try calling me after 9pm.
