The Tiger is Dead…But Let’s Welcome the Irish Lions

March 21, 2009

this was, perhaps, the most extraordinary teatime in Irish sporting history, and, in the end our boys made it happen. Friends are saying that the recession is over in Ireland…or at least it is in the pub trade for the next month or so anyway. They may be right.

I was tempted this morning to think that maybe it would be better if the whole thing didn’t matter, that it would pass me by without notice, like my friend who was looking forward to his lunch in Ikea today! But it mattered.

And the great commitment to it leaves me open to enormous disappointment…but also the extraordinary joy that the final whistle brought.

Like love I guess.
