Materialism

June 19, 2006

A further post from‘Listening Post’! Derek Poole made the following comment, that the mission of the church in the world is to affirm the humanity we see in the face of Christ; to look in the face of Christ and to affirm the humanity we see there.

Fascinating that.

It makes the cult of consumption a genuinely religious phenomenon. I consume to make myself someone. And the thing I consume has the capacity to do this for me only in so far as someone else doesn’t have it. But to make me someone another has to be devalued, to be a no-one. Materialism is therefore anti-human.
